Ingredients Recap:
2 cups warm water (110°F to 115°F)
2/3 cup white sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup vegetable oil (or melted butter for richer flavor)
5 1/2 to 6 cups bread flour
Instructions:
Activate the Yeast:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water and white sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the water. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes, or until the mixture is frothy.
Add Oil and Salt:
Stir in the vegetable oil (or melted butter) and salt.
Incorporate the Flour:
Gradually add the bread flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. Once the dough comes together, transfer it to a floured surface.
Knead the Dough:
Knead the dough for about 8–10 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle a little more flour as needed.
First Rise:
Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning it to coat the surface. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
Shape the Loaves:
Punch down the dough to release air bubbles. Divide it into two equal portions.
Shape each portion into a loaf and place them into greased 9×5-inch loaf pans.
Second Rise:
Cover the loaf pans with a kitchen towel and let the dough rise again for 30–40 minutes, or until it reaches about an inch above the rim of the pans.
Bake:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Bake the loaves for 25–30 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
Cool and Serve:
Remove the loaves from the pans and let them cool on a wire rack before slicing.
