Skillet Bread (Fried Dough)

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (plus extra for frying)
  • Optional: herbs (like rosemary or thyme), garlic powder, or  cheese for additional flavor

Instructions:

  • Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and instant yeast.
    • Add the warm water and olive oil, and mix until a dough forms.
    • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, until it is smooth and elastic.
    • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  • Divide and Shape the Dough:
    • Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air.
    • Divide the dough into 3-4 equal portions and shape each portion into a ball.
    • Roll out each ball into a flat round shape, about 1/2 inch thick.
  • Cook the  Bread:
    • Heat a large skillet or frying pan over medium heat and add enough olive oil to coat the bottom.
    • Once the oil is hot, place a dough round in the skillet.
    • Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and cooked through.
    • Repeat with the remaining dough rounds, adding more oil to the skillet as needed.
  • Optional: Add Flavorings:
    • If desired, sprinkle the bread with herbs, garlic powder, or grated cheese while it is cooking.
    • Alternatively, you can mix these ingredients into the dough before cooking.
  • Serve:
    • Serve the skillet bread warm, with your favorite dipping sauces, soups, or as a side to any meal.
