Skillet Bread (Fried Dough)
Ingredients:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast
- 1 1/4 cups warm water
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (plus extra for frying)
- Optional: herbs (like rosemary or thyme), garlic powder, or cheese for additional flavor
Instructions:
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and instant yeast.
- Add the warm water and olive oil, and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, until it is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
- Divide and Shape the Dough:
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air.
- Divide the dough into 3-4 equal portions and shape each portion into a ball.
- Roll out each ball into a flat round shape, about 1/2 inch thick.
- Cook the Bread:
- Heat a large skillet or frying pan over medium heat and add enough olive oil to coat the bottom.
- Once the oil is hot, place a dough round in the skillet.
- Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and cooked through.
- Repeat with the remaining dough rounds, adding more oil to the skillet as needed.
- Optional: Add Flavorings:
- If desired, sprinkle the bread with herbs, garlic powder, or grated cheese while it is cooking.
- Alternatively, you can mix these ingredients into the dough before cooking.
- Serve:
- Serve the skillet bread warm, with your favorite dipping sauces, soups, or as a side to any meal.
