Here’s a classic recipe for Ham and Potato Au Gratin:
Ingredients:
- 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (about 4 medium-sized potatoes)
- 2 cups diced ham
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish and set aside.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until softened and fragrant, about 2-3 minutes.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onion and garlic mixture, stirring constantly, and cook for another 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
- Gradually pour in the milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Cook the mixture until it thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
- Stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth. Season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste.
- Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish, followed by half of the diced ham. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes and ham, spreading it evenly.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, ham, and cheese sauce.
- Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the casserole, followed by the grated Parmesan cheese.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- Once cooked, remove the au gratin from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
- Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired, and serve warm.
